Zapin- A South Arabic Music Experience
by Samrah Al-Wehdah Al Arabia
Singapore
The scene is set for a festive gathering of a typical South Arab family and you are a specially invited guest! Join in the dancing and celebrations of a traditional samrah as they take you on a musical journey of Zapin music which originated from the Southern Arabic region of Hadhramaut, now popular in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Zapin or zafin was believed to have been introduced by Arab Muslim missionaries from the Middle East sometime around the fourteenth century. Zapin music normally consists of the gambus (a stringed instrument originally from Yemen), accordion, violin, marwas (bongos) and the rebana (hand drum). A distinct form has evolved amongst the localised Arab-Malay communities in Singapore and Malaysia, bringing in some aspects of Malay folk music into the original version.
Get set for an energetic evening of exotic music and dancing fun.
