"I want to stand on this hilltop with faith and pride. I–d like to look up at the birds with this feeling of full independence. To smell the fragrance of burnt weeds after the rain. And and if it pleases God that I die foolishly here, I would do so willingly. But I will not run away again "
Zahdi in Wira Bukit
First staged in October 1989 to commemorate the official inauguration of Teater KAMi, Wira Bukit marked the start of the theatre's long standing collaboration with Malaysian National Laureate, Mr. A. Samad Said. Now the play makes a comeback for fans of his thoughtful dramatic work.
Once again performed by the same theatre company Wira Bukit reveals the depression and oppression experienced by the villagers during the period of emergency and revolution in Indonesia and Malaysia.
The premise of the play is one which is filled with emotional intrigue set against a backdrop of political turmoil. The protagonist, Zahdi, returns to his hometown at the hillock after being away for 27 years, and his return sparks off a series of controversies in the village which is in the midst of an election campaign. Musir wants revenge for the death of his wife and two-year–old son and the prime suspects are Zahdi and his uncle, Kamsan. Adnan hates Zahdi because Nirah snubs the former's advances. Nirah, who has waited all 27 years for Zahdi's return, wants to confront him for leaving her pregnant and bringing to her family shame that eventually led to her mother's death.
Can Zahdi defend himself against these accusations?
